Mats Hummels Had a Reputation During his career as a professional soccer player for not always legg easy to deal with. However, Jürgen Klopp Welcomed the Defender’s Behavior.
Mats Hummels apparently had the reputation of being a “grouch,” but for Jürgen Klopp, that was even positive. “I find not having an opinion worse than having an opinion that is necessarily not always correct,” said the former BVB coach of Hummels in the documentary “Hummels – La Finale” from ZDF.
“It (his behavior, ed.) can’t have been bad, otherwise I would remember it,” Klopp looked back. Both were active together for Dortmund from 2008 to 2015, ten years later Hummels is hanging up his soccer boots.
If the former BVB player had attracted negative attention, then “mostly verbally, never through aggression,” the 57-year-old recalled. Because he “could give retorts,” Klopp described the opinionated behavior of the 2014 World Champion.
Hummels and Klopp Did not Always Agree
If the 36-year-old had gone too far, he had “always realized relatively quickly himself that it was a bit too much.”
Klopp and Hummels Shared a Characteristic
The interaction between the former head coach and the central defender “was always respectful.” Klopp himself had often overshot the mark in his life, this commonality united the two.
The former Liverpool coach therefore found the appearance of the former national player, who occasionally gave retorts, more pleasant than not having his own opinion.
