The long -time assistant of Sarina Wiegman, Arjan Veurink, takes over Oranje after the tournament in summer. In 2017 he was already the European Championship winner with the Netherlands.
The Dutch footballers found a replacement for the former Bundesliga coach Andries Jonker. As the KNVB association announced on Tuesday, Arjan Veurink succeeds the bond coach after the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland. Jonker had already announced his withdrawal for after the tournament (July 2 to 27) in January.
Veurink is the long-time assistant of successful trainer Sarina Wiegman and will resign as an assistant coach of the English national team after the European Championship. “With over eight years of experience at the highest level as Sarina Wiegman’s right hand, first in the Netherlands and now in England, I am ready to stand on my own feet,” said the 38-year-old.
Netherlands won EM title 2017
Together, Veurink and Wiegman led the Netherlands to the 2017 European Championship title and the 2019 World Cup final. Even after moving to the English national team, the duo was successful. In 2022, the “Lionesses” won the European Championship in their own country through a 2-1 NV in the final against Germany. For the first title of England since 1966 they even received the British Order of Knights.
“He knows what is necessary at the absolute top, but also knows how important it is to maintain the connection to the base,” said KNVB sports director Nigel de Jong. Jonker’s expiring contract was not extended. It was “time for a new phase,” it said in January.
