Surprising Barca revelation from Thomas Müller

Thomas Müller joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in the summer

Thomas Müller is impressing at his new club in Vancouver. Now the former Bayern star reveals that he could also have imagined an engagement with FC Barcelona.

Before his move to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Thomas Müller apparently could also have imagined a surprising engagement with FC Barcelona.

“I wanted to get out of Europe. There might have been one or two options,” explained the former Bayern star in an interview on the BR program Blickpunkt Sport. “Let me say, if Hansi Flick had called me, who knows me very well and I would have liked the role in Barcelona – I might have said: I can imagine something like that.”

Müller also elaborated on what would have appealed to him about such a scenario: “You’re at a top club, you know what people expect from you.”

A move to a club without clear sporting perspective was ruled out by the 36-year-old: “Where you play in a team where you can’t assess which direction this season is going, which direction your role is going, what the expectations of the fans are.”

Müller confirmed again that a move to Sydney would have been an alternative. Ultimately, however, family reasons and the long flight time spoke against it: “I said: ten hours direct flight daily or 24 hours – and you have to go through three stops… ‘Yes, then do Vancouver’ – so the debate was quickly off the table, everyone agreed on that.”

In Canada, Müller has had a dream start: In his first eight matches for the Whitecaps, the veteran scored eight goals and four assists. The MLS regular season ended with the club in second place in the Western Conference after a 1:2 home defeat against FC Dallas – now they face Dallas again in the playoffs.
