Mats Hummels is Considering Hanging Up His Football Boots in the Summer and Ending His Career. Or is he? In his new documentary, the defender Surprises with a statement.
In early April, Mats Hummels announced his retirement. The defender would retire from professional football after the current season in Italy, he said himself.
Statements in his documentary “Hummels – La Finale. With Tommi Schmitt” now leave room for speculation: Can the 2014 World Champion imagine a continuation of his professional career?
“Nothing is ever 100 percent excluded,” Hummels said in an interview with presenter Tommi Schmitt. However, he qualified: “It is extremely unlikely. Extremely.”
Mats Hummels Has Made Surprising Statements
“I would need something so crazy about”
What scenario would it take to convince Hummels to continue? “I would need something I’m so crazy about that I’m willing to make that sacrifice of private life again and also see my son less.”
The 36-year-old would only be willing to return to the football pitch after the summer for one club – Borussia Dortmund: “The only thing in my feeling would be BVB, for whom I would do it. I don’t think that will happen. At least I would start to think about it.”
Return? Hummels Inquired at BVB
The 2014 World Champion played a total of 508 competitive games for the Westphalians. Most recently, there were repeated rumors about a possible return to the black and yellow jersey for the upcoming Club World Cup in the USA, but sporting director Sebastian Kehl almost completely took the wind out of their sails in the Steelworks double pass.
However, Hummels made it clear: “Ending my career as a BVB player with another year would be another thing in my head.” He sought an exchange a week before the conversation with Schmitt. “I don’t think it will happen.”
After the lost Champions League final in 2024, Hummels left BVB and joined AS Roma. He only started his chapter in the Italian capital in September, missing the entire pre-season. If he were to continue his career, he would choose a different path.
“If I were to do it again, I wouldn’t start again in September. I would have to start in July. I definitely won’t feel like training again in July. Definitely not.”
