The situation of Marc-André ter Stegen is causing big waves in Spain: Now the Barca keeper is openly accused of sabotage.
The relationship between Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona is apparently finally broken! The German national goalkeeper is facing astonishing accusations – and could soon be stripped of the captaincy.
“Ter Stegen sabotages Joan García’s registration,” headlined the Spanish sports newspaper As. The Marca struck the same chord, referring to sources from the club. And even Mundo Deportivo now speaks openly of the keeper deliberately wanting to cause problems for his employer.
Marc-André ter Stegen sees himself confronted with blatant accusations
The accusation in the room: Ter Stegen, who is said to have been demoted to number three in the meantime, is trying to prevent the registration of his potential heir García by unilaterally announcing his injury break.
Barca and ter Stegen: “The darkest hours”
The German had spoken of a three-month forced break. According to LaLiga rules, a club in Spain can use 80 percent of the salary of the failed player to register other players – but only if the injured player is out for at least four months.
“The condemned goalkeeper: Ter Stegen and Barcelona are living their darkest hours,” writes the As further. The club will remove the captain’s armband from the German keeper – as a result of the “open conflict about his attitude.”
The Marca believes: “The situation is almost untenable.” Ter Stegen, once a leader and celebrated hero of the Catalans, has become an “unpleasant part” of the team. Also, the fact that the 33-year-old persistently refuses to leave the club is said to be causing anger.
Ter Stegen without a clear statement
From parts of the club it can be heard: Ter Stegen is “playing” with the downtime in order to “get the club into trouble”. The already damaged connection is now destroyed. Mundo Deportivo spoke of “enormous anger” on the club side.
Ter Stegen, meanwhile, has not officially commented on his situation for weeks – apart from his injury message to the fans.
Ter Stegen is one of the top earners at Barca and is under contract until 2028.
Should he no longer leave Barca, his potential regular place in the DFB goal for the 2026 World Cup is also in danger.
