Turkish authorities have ordered the arrest of several football players in connection with the betting scandal.
As the Istanbul prosecutor’s office announced on Friday, the arrest of a total of 46 people, including 29 players, has been ordered.
Also team colleague of Sané in focus
According to reports, 27 of them are suspected of betting on games of their own team. According to the prosecutor’s office, this includes Metehan Baltaci from Galatasaray Istanbul. The teammate of ex-Bayern star Leroy Sané was already suspended for nine months in November.
The identities of the remaining 26 players involved were not named. However, Mert Hakan Yandas of Fenerbahçe Istanbul is suspected of placing bets on various games through third parties.
As the authorities reported, 35 of the 46 wanted persons have been arrested so far. The investigations are also directed against the presidents of two clubs who are said to have tried to influence the outcome of a third division match of the 2023/24 season.
Scandal shakes Turkish football
The investigations by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office, which are currently shaking Turkish football, had already led to the imprisonment of six referees and the president of first division club Eyüpspor at the beginning of November.
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had suspended almost 150 referees a few days earlier. In addition, 25 professionals from the first league and almost 1000 other players from the second, third and fourth leagues were banned for up to twelve months.
