German women are rewarded for their strong performances in the previous season. The men have to cut back.
The Biathlon World Association IBU has published a current update for the qualification for the 2026 Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo – and gave fans a comprehensive overview of the places for the competition previously awarded.
A total of 186 of 210 quota places have already been awarded – eleven of them go to Germany.
Biathlon men only with five athletes at Olympics
The women of the German Ski Association (DSV) around overall World Cup winner Franziska Preuß, on the other hand, are only allowed to travel with five instead of six athletes to the competitions to Antholz (February 6th to 22nd). At the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, the distribution was still reversed – the German men were able to nominate six participants, the women five.
The decisive factor for the first major allocation of the quota places was the placement of the teams in the Nations Cup of the 2024/25 World Cup season. There the women took third place and developed the maximum as well as the French women and Swedes.
The men, on the other hand, landed fourth behind Norway, France and Sweden and are only allowed to take a replacement runner with them. Four starters per nation are entitled to start in the individual races.
24 places have not yet been awarded
The IBU event and competition rules do not provide for the participation of neutral athletes, the World Association continued – so there will definitely be no Olympic starter from Russia or Belarus.
The 24 other starting places for the Olympic Games are awarded via an individual point list running to the World Cup in Ruhpolding.
However, only athletes can qualify for this, whose association could not secure a quota place through the Nations Cup – the German ski hunters are therefore outside.
