By March 2027, twelve tickets will be awarded in European qualifications. Germany is dealing with feasible opponents.
Basketball world champion Germany is dealing with the title defending in qualifying with Israel, newcomer Cyprus and an underdog that has not yet been established. This was the result of the draw for the elimination games for the World Cup finals 2027 (August 27th to September 13th) on Tuesday at the tournament facility Doha/Qatar.
A good two years after the title sensation of his successors, the German basketball icon Dirk Nowitzki brought the golden World Cup trophy in the sophisticated shopping center Al Hazm. “In my time, we would not have believed that Germany could ever become world champion. But in 2023 the German team was enthusiastic and showed that everything is possible in sports,” recalled the former NBA champion before the draw by “Glücksfee” and US Olympic champion Carmelo Anthony again of the “Miracle of Manila”.
Germany as a defending champion in pot 1
Germany was pulled out of pot 1 as the third in the world and thus avoided the Olympic third and World Cup second Serbia (2nd), the Olympic second of France (4th) and European champion Spain (5th). Israel currently appears as number 39 in the world rankings as the most demanding opponent for the gold medal winner of 2023. Cyprus takes part in a World Cup excretion for the first time. The third opponent of the German team becomes Denmark, Norway or Croatia.
From November 2025 to March 2027, the European qualification with 32 teams will be held in six international play windows. Twelve World Cup tickets are to be awarded.
There are initially eight groups of four, from which the three best teams each reach the second excretion phase. After that, four six groups (3+3) are formed, three participants each come to the World Cup finals.
All results from the first group phase are taken into the second, then by March 2027 there will be a return leg against the teams added from the parallel group.
