New attack on the ski flying world record: In Planica, jumps of up to 270 meters should soon be possible.
The Slovenian government approved funding for this, allowing a 2.69 million euro expansion of the already huge ski jump to be realized by November 2027.
Currently, the best mark is 254.5 m, set by Slovenian Domen Prevc in March 2025 in Planica.
New rules make ski jump extension possible
“This year, FIS issued new regulations that increased the maximum permissible height difference from the end of the takeoff table to the lowest point from 135 to 140 meters. In this context, we developed an investment proposal that has now been approved by the government,” said Jelko Gros from the Nordic Center in Planica.
For more than three decades, Planica and the “Monsterbakken” in Norwegian Vikersund have been competing for the world record.
Kobayashi already flew 291 meters
What is theoretically possible was demonstrated by Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi in April 2024: The three-time winner of the Four Hills Tournament even flew 291.0 meters on a temporarily built ski jump in Iceland, but this mark is not recognized as a ski flying world record.
