Oldenburg pro Chris Clemson delivered a historically significant performance in the BBL.
Fans cheered every point in the end, and his own coach could hardly believe it: With a 52-point showcase, Chris Clemons etched his name into the Basketball Bundesliga history books on Friday. “Chris had a perfect day, hitting almost everything,” said coach Predrag Krunić of the EWE Baskets Oldenburg about his protégé’s performance.
The 50-point barrier was last broken in the BBL by Trier’s Sergej Babkov in 1993 (51). The last player to score more points than Clemons was Mike Jackel in 1992 for Bamberg, who needed an additional overtime period for his 55 points. The league record has stood since 1988 at 65 points, held by Hagen’s Keith Gray.
Clemson scored almost at will
Clemons scored almost at will in the 108:85 (51:50) victory against promoted team VET-Concept Gladiators Trier: The US guard converted nine of eleven three-pointers and made 18 of 25 shots from the field. He also shattered the previous club record of Tyron McCoy (43 points). “We never got defensive control – especially against Chris Clemons, who obviously stood out,” said Trier’s coach Jacques Schneider.
