Barca goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will be out for months. The 33-year-old is undergoing back surgery, as he himself reports.
Bitter news from DFB goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen: The 33-year-old will undergo back surgery and will be out for around three months. Ter Stegen announced this on social media.
“Physically and athletically I feel in very good condition, although unfortunately I am not pain-free. After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, back surgery is the fastest and safest way for me to make a full recovery,” ter Stegen wrote, among other things, on X.
After his last back operation, it “took him 66 days to return to the field.”
“This time, the doctors assume that about three months will be needed as a precaution to avoid any risks,” said ter Stegen.
The national goalkeeper had already been out from November 2023 to February 2024 due to a back injury. Between September 2024 and April 2025, he was absent due to a patellar tendon rupture.
Ter Stegen himself has not yet expressed any intention to move. Due to his injury, a departure in this transfer window seems impossible anyway.
“I wear the colors and jersey of FC Barcelona with great pride, whether on or off the field, in moments of success and in difficult times. Today is a personally difficult day for me,” wrote the goalkeeper: “Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the way back is clear.”
The German has been playing in Barcelona since 2014 and rose to captain there. His contract with Barcelona expires in 2028.
“I will keep you updated on my recovery and would like to thank you all, dear Culers, for always being by my side. Don’t worry, I’ll be back!,” said ter Stegen.
