National goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has successfully undergone back surgery. Ter Stegen’s club, FC Barcelona, announced this in a “medical update.”
The procedure took place again with Dr. Amélie Léglise at the Sportklinik Bordeaux Merignac in France. Ter Stegen had already undergone a procedure on his back there at the end of 2023.
Barca did not provide any information about the expected downtime. Ter Stegen had put this at “about three months” when he announced the surgery last week. According to him, he also wanted to send a club-political signal: Barcelona may only use 80 percent of his salary to register new players if he is out for at least four months.
Ter Stegen sees the operation as the “fastest and safest way to a full recovery,” as he had confirmed. His future is uncertain.
With a view to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, he needs a regular place.
