Behind the future of Marc-André ter Stegen at FC Barcelona are many question marks. Officially, however, the German is still captain of the Catalans – and that should remain so from the perspective of two Barca stars.
Frenkie de Jong and Ferran Torres have backed Marc-André ter Stegen and have clearly stated that the German should remain captain of FC Barcelona despite his difficult situation.
“For me, Marc is the captain of the team, as he was last season. Marc is a world-class player who has always given his best for the club, and that’s why I support Marc very much and as far as I know, so does the team,” de Jong clarified after Barca’s clear 7-3 test match victory against FC Seoul.

Teammate Torres also struck a similar chord: “I don’t know if there will be a vote or not, we haven’t talked about it yet, or at least I don’t know anything about it, but Marc will be captain simply because of his experience and the many years he has been there.”
Ter Stegen, who moved to Spain from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, no longer plays a central role in the plans of head coach Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona.
The goalkeeper has officially been the team’s captain since the summer of 2024. Hansi Flick left it open whether the German will remain captain in the upcoming season.
“It is always the team that decides that. We have done it that way in the past. We will see. Normally we do it in the last week before the start of the season,” said the 60-year-old.
