FC Bayern lands a major transfer coup

Last on the ball for the Mavericks: Spencer Dinwiddie

FC Bayern Munich is strengthening its roster with significant NBA experience. Spencer Dinwiddie previously played alongside superstar Luka Doncic.

The German basketball champion Bayern Munich has presented a notable new addition. Long-time NBA professional Spencer Dinwiddie signed a contract with the team of world champion coach Gordon Herbert until the end of the season, as Munich announced.

Most recently, the 32-year-old had been under contract with the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA but was released last week before the season started.

“Spencer is an electric player, he can score and create for others and had great years in the NBA,” said Herbert, who knows Dinwiddie from their shared time with the Brooklyn Nets, where Herbert worked as a coaches consultant during the 2019/2020 season.

NBA professional to Munich: Dinwiddie played with Doncic

Last season, Dinwiddie played 79 games for the Dallas Mavericks, and from 2021 to 2023, the guard had already played in the former team of icon Dirk Nowitzki, including alongside superstar Luka Doncic.

Overall, Dinwiddie played for five different franchises in the world’s best basketball league over eleven years. He completed 621 games there (345 as a starter), averaging 13 points and 5.1 assists per game. His best year was during the COVID season 2019/20, when he replaced the then long-term injured superstar Kyrie Irving in the starting five for the Nets and was the team’s top scorer with a scoring average of 20.6 in his absence.

Dinwiddie’s NBA career began in 2014 when the Detroit Pistons selected him at number 38 in the draft. Besides the Mavericks and Nets, Dinwiddie also played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards. For the Hornets, he only played preseason games recently.
