National goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is reportedly on the verge of a move to Spanish top-flight club FC Girona, who are threatened with relegation. According to consistent reports from Spanish media, FC Barcelona is currently in intense negotiations with the third-to-last placed team regarding a loan deal until the end of the season.
At least Mundo Deportivo , however, writes that ter Stegen is still considering staying. His appearance in the Copa del Rey recently gave him courage. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old’s future with the Spanish champions is considered questionable. Coach Hansi Flick relies on goalkeeper Joan García.

For ter Stegen’s dream of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada this summer as number one to come true, he urgently needs match practice. National coach Julian Nagelsmann also recently made this clear.

“It is important that he plays,” said Nagelsmann, “whether that is at a European top club or not is not the deciding factor.” But: “Of course, it would be good if he also plays reasonably well.”
In Girona, ter Stegen could distinguish himself. With 33 goals conceded after 17 games, the defense is the worst in the league. Additionally, Girona is only about 100 km north of Barcelona. Ter Stegen, who is separated, would therefore not be far from his two sons.
In Barcelona, the long-serving captain is still under contract until 2028. In December, after his back surgery, he made an appearance again in the cup match against third-division club CD Guadalajara (2:0). “It was a good opportunity for him; he has given a lot to the club. We spoke with the coaching staff and decided that he would play. Only for this match,” Flick had explained afterwards.
