Biathlon star Preuß is struggling: zero errors are “almost not enough anymore”

Overall World Cup winner Franziska Preuß highlights the high level among biathletes. For Selina Grotian, the anxious wait continues.

Zero errors, but again no podium: After finishing fifth in the sprint at the home World Cup in Ruhpolding, biathlete Franziska Preuß emphasizes the “insanely high level” in the field.

“It’s almost no longer enough to shoot clean. You have to shoot clean in 20 seconds. One must grudgingly admit that the others are a touch better,” said the 31-year-old. “It’s really crazy and brutal when you look at the time differences,” added DSV Sports Director Felix Bitterling.

Nevertheless, Germany’s Sportswoman of the Year, who missed her first podium finish of the winter by just under five seconds, looked forward to Sunday’s pursuit (12:30 pm/ZDF and Eurosport) with confidence. “It will be an exciting race. I’ll try to carry the flow and enjoy the race. A lot is possible.”

Bitterling also believes this: “She’s in a great starting position. She’s doing really well. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s enough for the podium.” This would be “another little door opener” with a view to the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo (February 6 to 22).

The frustration from the relay, when Preuß incurred a penalty loop, was certainly forgotten. “I think I’m on the right track. I’ve had some good conversations in the last few days and I’m trying not to think too much about expectations and placements,” said the Overall World Cup winner. Because “subconsciously, it might affect me more than I think.”

Will the Olympic dream burst? Grotian under pressure

The topic of the Olympics also continues to occupy top talent Selina Grotian. Finishing 15th in the sprint, she at least fulfilled half of the Olympic standard. In the 10 km pursuit, Grotian wants to eliminate all doubts. The pressure is high.

“Normally I’m not nervous, but now the last few races I’ve been very, very nervous. I hope I can get back to my old self,” she said.
