German combiners third after jumping in World Cup

The “Oberstdorf-Express” in Trondheim is promising in the decisive cross-country skiing.

The German combiners are on a medal course in the team competition of the Nordic Ski World Cup in Trondheim. The four Oberstdorfer Vinzenz Geiger, Julian Schmid, Johannes Rydzek and Wendelin Thannheimer came to third place in jumping from the Großchanze on Friday among only nine participating teams.

“We will definitely attack,” said the third -scale third violin to the SID. The five-time world champion Rydzek said: “The fact that today four athletes from SC Oberstdorf are almost from three generations of athletes are the result of the good work that we do there.”

The “Oberstdorf-Express” is 22 seconds behind the leading Norwegians into the cross-country skiing relay over 4×5 km from 3:30 p.m. The second is Austria (+20 seconds), fourth Japan (+48). Most recently, the World Cup team competition had won three times in a row in front of Germany and Austria. The German men won in 2015 and 2017, both times with Rydzek.

The veteran opened with a good 131.0 m, debutant Thannheimer jumped solidly with 129.0 m. Olympic champion Geiger kept Germany on course with 130.5 m before Schmid, Vice World Champion of Planica 2023, lost some ground on Norway’s top star Jarl Magnus Riiber (134.5).

The team competition should have taken place on Thursday, but was postponed for one day due to a storm over Trondheim. The single competition from the Großschanze is still on Saturday.
