DFB star describes horror experience: “Knie was in a completely different position”

Marc-André Ter Stegen has had a brutal injury. The DFB star looks back on a fateful evening.

Marc-André Ter Stegen looks back on the horror injury, which cost him a large part of the season.

“The first thing I felt was a pull in my thigh,” reported Ter Stegen in the “phrase mower” podcast of the BILD newspaper: “The pain shot through the whole body. When I looked down, I knew immediately that it wasn’t just a bit on the thigh.”

The German national goalkeeper had torn the patella tendon in a actually harmless movement in the game against Villarreal last September. The dismayed reactions of co-players quickly made it clear at the time: something worse happened here.

“My knee was in a completely different position”

Ter Stegen described what exactly the protagonists got on the pitch: “My knee was in a completely different position than it should be and it was clear that you couldn’t just ‘turn it back’.”

When the diagnosis was announced a little later last autumn, there was already talk of a possible season. Eight months of break were in the room.

“And now I got into team training after six months, feel physically fit than ever and am full of energy,” said the 32-year-old.

He did not have an exact date for a comeback in his head, Spanish media writing from the end of April. “When I master the stresses with fit and all parts of the team training, I will already pie the coach so that he knows that I am ready.”

A good memory of bad evening

He would have finally left the horror injury from last year. In addition to the pain and the unsightly pictures, Ter Stegen also has another memory of that evening in the head.

The DFB star said: “That the fans of Villarreal who applauded opponents and teammates when I was carried by the square meant a lot to me. That showed me what importance I am here.”
