Team manager Frank Lampard can continue to dream of promotion to the Premier League with Coventry City. On the last matchday of the championship, the team of the former English national soccer player won 2-0 (1-0) against FC Middlesbrough and secured one of the four playoff places as the fifth in the table.
There, Coventry, who has been waiting for the highest division for 24 years now, meets AFC Sunderland. Sheffield United plays against Bristol City in the second semi-final duel. The first legs take place on the 8th and 9th, the second legs take place on May 12th and 13th.
From a financial point of view, the final in the Wembley Stadium (May 24th) is the largest final in European football. It is estimated that the promoted team in the Premier League receives at least 135 million pounds (around 159 million euros) over a period of three seasons.
Meanwhile, Luton Town’s descent continued, after the 3: 5 (1: 3) defeat at West Bromwich Albion, the club has to go to the third division. It is the second descent within two years after Luton did not make the leap into the Premier League until 2023.
Daniel Farke and Leeds United, however, secured the championship in the second division. The traditional club, which had already stood up as a promoted man, won 2-1 (0: 1) at the relegated Plymouth Argyle and thus defended the top position compared to the second Premier League returnee FC Burnley.
