After emergency operation: update to Awoniyi

The former Bundesliga striker recovered after his serious injury, including emergency surgery and coma, the coach said on Friday.

With a view to the health of the seriously injured former Bundesliga striker Taiwo Awoniyi, Nuno Espirito Santo carefully gave the all-clear.

“Fortunately, the operation went well, it is monitored, but it recovers,” said Nottingham Forest team manager. Awoniyi crashed into the post in the 2-2 in the Premier League game against Leicester City on Sunday, had to be operated on the artificial coma. According to the BBC, the Nigerian suffered an intestinal tear.

Awoniyi had been operated on twice, currently he is awake and able to speak to his family. However, he should stay in the hospital in the coming days. According to Espirito Santo, the doctors had not yet given a visitor permit.

Santo reports of difficult days

“We are concerned, but it is positive,” said Espirito Santo and added to the past few days: “It was very difficult because the injury and the situation he went through worried.”

Awoniyi, from 2019 to 2020 at FSV Mainz 05 and from 2020 to 2022 at Union Berlin, had suffered the serious injury when he tried to reach a flank. The 27-year-old had been substituted in the 83rd minute and injured himself shortly afterwards. After a break of treatment, the Nigerian had returned to the square, but had visible problems.

After the game, club owner Evangelo’s Marinakis was stormed onto the pitch and had vigorously confronted Espirito Santo.

After 133 years, the Everton fans of the "Grand Old Lady" say goodbye on Sunday. After all: the stadium is not torn down.

On his Instagram profile, the Greek later played up the excitement as a frustration with a misjudgment of the medical staff with regard to the operational ability of Awoniyi. The club also wrote in a message from a “common frustration” towards the medical team, which “should never have allowed players”.
