Biathlon: “New beginning” – German star makes comeback

After Johannes Thingnes Bö's career ended, the question arises as to whether there will be a new dominator in biathlon. Former world champion Benedikt Doll shares his opinion and also talks about an alleged youth problem among the DSV men.

The DSV announces the squad for the biathlon competitions in Oberhof. While two men have to step aside, a young athlete celebrates her comeback.

On Thursday, the Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof kicks off with the men’s sprint.

It is now also clear which German athletes the fans can cheer for. The German Ski Association has announced the squad for the competitions. Good news: Selina Grotian is back. The 21-year-old had recently missed the World Cups in Hochfilzen and Le Grand Bornand due to illness.

“The illness ultimately lasted a little longer than initially thought or hopes. For me, it currently feels like a second start to the season, in a way like a new beginning,” Grotian is quoted in the DSV announcement. To make way for the returnee, Julia Kink is leaving the squad.

Riethmüller and Kaiser must make way

Among the men, there are even two changes, which Sports Director Felix Bitterling explains as follows: “Danilo Riethmüller and Simon Kaiser will go to the IBU Cup at Arber despite repeatedly good running performances, with the expectation of seeing a corresponding reaction there.”

He continued: “In return, Lucas Fratzscher and Johannes Kühn are moving up to the World Cup team after strong performances in the IBU Cup in December.”

Among the women, in addition to Grotian, overall World Cup winner Franziska Preuß, Janina Hettich-Walz, Julia Tannheimer, Vanessa Voigt, and Anna Weidel will be at the start.

Among the men, alongside the two newcomers, Philipp Horn, Philipp Nawrath, David Zobel, and Justus Strelow are included.
