Manchester United pulls the plug and parts ways with its coach. After an astonishing press conference, the decision was already becoming apparent.
Ruben Amorim is no longer Manchester United’s coach. As the club officially announced, the Portuguese was dismissed with immediate effect.
The decision followed a day after a baffling appearance by Amorim: At a press conference, he had launched a broadside, criticizing, among others, sporting director Jason Wilcox.
Amorim’s time at United is likely over
Former United professional Darren Fletcher will serve as interim coach. The current U18 coach will manage the team in Wednesday’s match against Burnley.
United “reluctantly” parts ways with Amorim
“As Manchester United currently stands in sixth place in the Premier League, the club management has reluctantly made the decision that it is time to make a change,” the club’s statement reads. This gives “the team the best chance of achieving the highest possible position in the Premier League.”
Amorim had taken the job at the Red Devils in November 2024. He was at the helm for 63 competitive matches. Last season, he led the English record champions to the Europa League final – but they suffered a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur there.
