Bizarre barca scenario around ter Stegen

Barca keeper Marc-André Ter Stegen will be missing from the Catalan for months. The 33-year-old undergo back surgery, as he reports himself.

Marc-André ter Stegen must take a long break – the exact duration of his forced break plays an important role for FC Barcelona.

Marc-André ter Stegen apparently incurred the displeasure of his club by announcing his injury break. The German national goalkeeper had announced that he would be out for three months after back surgery – which could be a problem for FC Barcelona.

Because for Barca, a longer injury break for the captain, as bizarre as it may sound, might even be better. The reason: In the event of a long-term injury, a club in Spain can use 80 percent of the salary of the player who is out to register other players.

However, such a long-term injury only begins after four months, as the Spanish newspaper Sport reported, referring to Article 77 of LaLiga’s budget rules.

Does ter Stegen ensure García registration?

After ter Stegen’s advance, which was not well received, Barca announced the absence of their goalkeeper, who was already largely sorted out, without defining a time frame.

The club had already benefited from the absence of a player last summer. At that time, Andreas Christensen’s injury enabled Dani Olmo to be registered.

Especially with top earner ter Stegen, 80 percent of the salary would be a significant number. The registration of new players has been a real challenge for financially troubled Barcelona for some time.

For example, the recently signed goalkeeper Joan García, who is supposed to succeed ter Stegen, has not yet been registered. Is the German involuntarily taking the decisive step in his degradation himself?

Ter Stegen away for much longer?

In addition to Sport, Marca also writes about the topic – the newspapers emphasize, also referring to medical experts, that ter Stegen could only be back in three months in the best case scenario. A period of four to six months is therefore also considered quite realistic.

Jordi Ardèvol, from 1990 to 2006 in the medical department of ter Stegen’s FC Barcelona and their head for three years, expects a “somewhat more complex” recovery phase. The doctor pointed out to Radio Catalunya that back surgery is more complicated for goalkeepers than for outfield players.

Ardèvol belongs to the medical commission of the Spanish league, which issues an absence prognosis after the operation. And thus decides what effects the absence has on Barca’s squad list.
