Controversy surrounding Littler: SPORT1 expert makes clear verdict

Andi Cornwell criticizes world champion Luke Littler for taking part in the youth world championships and he fires right back. The Sport1 commentators Basti Schwele and Robert Marijanovic analyze the topic.

This darts dispute is heating up tempers: After Luke Littler’s sharp counter to criticism from former tour card holder Andy Cornwall, SPORT1 expert Robert Marijanovic is now commenting on this debate.

SPORT1 expert Robert Marijanovic criticized former darts professional Andy Cornwall during the TV broadcast of the European Darts Championship (LIVE on SPORT1), who in turn had attacked Luke Littler in the “Mission Darts Podcast” for his participation in the Junior World Championship.

“You’d need our databases to find him (Andy Cornwall; editor’s note), to put it exaggeratedly. He received some pushback in the same podcast from Matthew Edgar, in my view one of the best analysts for this game,” explained the expert.

Marijanovic elaborated more specifically: “He also clearly said ‘The game has been elevated by Luke Littler’. He didn’t win either. So much was reported about this youth world championship, at least until both semifinals, that wouldn’t have happened without Littler.”

Regarding the motives for Cornwall’s criticism, the 45-year-old speculated: “I think this is also part of social media today, you have to provoke a bit. I think this episode was listened to a bit more frequently than many other episodes of this podcast.”

Moderator colleague Basti Schwele also found direct words for Cornwall: “It was made out to be a big deal, ex-pro Andy Cornwall. Many people first had to look up: Who the hell is Andy Cornwall?”

Littler’s response to the criticism of him was even sharper. “I saw that Andy Cornwall said something about (Stephen; editor’s note) Bunting yesterday. Now he’s saying something about me. What an absolute fool he is – and I don’t know him,” the world champion wrote on Instagram.
