Luke Humphries storms into the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts – despite obviously struggling with physical complaints.
Luke Humphries has reached the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts with a show of strength, even though he is struggling with physical problems.
The world number one defeated Dutchman Jurjen van der Velde 10-3 – and, despite his complaints, recorded a strong three-dart average of 108.55 points and an impressive doubles rate of 76.92 per cent.

Luke Humphries was not deterred by his complaints
Humphries appeared paralyzed at times during the match and winced painfully several times. In the subsequent winner’s interview on stage, he explained his complaints: “When I woke up this morning, I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. I think I strained my back.”
The Englishman continued: “I thought I would have to cancel today. It was really that bad. My back and shoulder hurt so much. I just have to thank my physiotherapist Mandy.”
Darts: Humphries doesn’t let himself be thrown off track
Regardless of the complaints, Humphries didn’t give his opponent a chance and quickly made it 5-0 – with an outstanding average.
Already before the match, the British darts icon Wayne Mardle, who works as an expert at Sky Sports , reported on Humphries’ impairments.
“He trained on earlier stage and strained his neck or shoulder overnight – maybe he pulled a muscle or something. He’s in pain and is definitely not 100 percent fit,” explained the ex-professional.
