The Italian ski sport is again shaken by a tragic accident of a young talent.
Great grief in Italy: Ski talent Marco Degli Uomini died after a fall in training on Sunday. This was announced by the Italian ski association FISI. The young driver was only 18 years old.
“We are shocked,” said Maurizio Dunnhofer, President of the regional association Friuli Venezia Giulia (FISI FVG). “The world of regional and national skiing is included in the family and the Monte Dauda ski club at this very difficult moment.”
The accident occurred on Monte Zoncolan. According to information from the Italian radio Rai, the speed specialist fell when warming up on a slope next to the actual racetrack, where he was later to start as the forerunner of the Super-G of the regional children’s championships.
Degli Uomini came down after a jump and landed in the fishing net. He is said to have suffered several broken bones, but was initially still with consciousness. In the Tolmezzo hospital, however, his condition worsened, whereupon he was moved to the intensive care unit in Udine. There he was declared dead on Sunday.
Great grief for ski talent: “A tragedy”
“A tragedy that affects the entire regional community and for which I express my deepest condolences and my connection for the family, friends and the Monte Dauda ski club,” said the president of the region, Massimiliano Fedriga. “Friuli-Julian Veneto (region in northeastern Italy, editor’s editor) mourns the mourns over a young man who loved sport and mountains and was torn out of life much too early.”
His ski club posted a picture of degli uomini on the slopes on Instagram. “So we want to remember you, Marco, with joy in skiing, the same sport that took you so tragically from all of us,” the club wrote. “Thanks for your big heart. Thanks for your sincerity. Thanks for your loyalty and fairness. You will always stay with us. “
It is already the second deadly misfortune in Italian ski sports this winter. In October, 19-year-old Matilde Lorenzi died after a training session on the Schnalstaler glacier in South Tyrol.
