In the NBA game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons (126: 104) around the German Point Guard Dennis Schröder, there was a tangible tumult on Monday night, which led to the disqualification of five players and two trainers.
The game in Minneapolis was interrupted in the second quarter by the argument, which occurred at 8:36 minutes on the clock and a score of 39:30 in favor of the pistons.
Technical fouls and heated word battles
Detroit had to say goodbye to Head Coach JB Bickerstaff, Center Isaiah Stewart, Forward Ron Holland II and Guard Marcus Sasser. Forward Naz Reid and Guard Donte Divincenzo and Assistant Coach Pablo Prigioni of the field were expelled from Timberwolves.
The tumult started when Stewart received a technical foul shortly before after he had tough down Divincincen after a whistle. Holland was then punished for a foul when he Reiden the ball from his hands near the baseline. This was followed by a heated word battle between the two, whereupon Divincenzo interfered and Holland’s jersey grabbed. Within a very short time, all ten players on the field and several coaches and supervisors were involved in the handmade.
Trainer dispute and prominent viewer
While the players were separated from each other, Bickerstaff and Prigioni loudly clashed and had to be kept apart by team workers.
The entire scene took place just a few meters from Alex Rodriguez, the new owner of the Timberwolves. Rodriguez, who pursued what was going on from his place on the edge of the field, stepped in after the argument and seemed to organize help for a fan that had gotten into the tumult.
“Things went too far”
“Things went a bit too far, but it was easy to see that the boys were standing together,” said Bickerstaff about the fight.
Schröder, who was again in the starting line-up, achieved a double double with 11 points and 11 assists, but Detroit could not compensate for the failure of his three regular players. In total, the referees expressed twelve technical fouls, in no NBA game since March 2005 there had been more.
This heated encounter shows once again how quickly the emotions can boil up in the NBA and what consequences this can have for those involved. The league will surely examine the incidents carefully and take appropriate measures.
