Lionel Messi should extend his contract with Inter Miami. The chances are good – and it would be a statement with a view to the World Cup.
Inter Miami is apparently about to extend the contract with Lionel Messi. The current working paper of the Argentine world champion runs until the end of the year.
The US portal The Athletic reports that the talks about the extent of the contract have already been well advanced. Only details are still being filed.
Lionel Messi has been playing for Inter Miami since 2023
Messi’s World Cup participation still open
Not only for Inter Miami itself, but also for the MLS, a remaining Messi would be a statement in the US World Cup in the USA. The 37-year-old has been playing in Florida since 2023. He scored 42 times in 48 games and gave 21 templates.
Since Inter, thanks to the winning of the MLS Supporter ‘Shield’ SHIELD, secured a place at the new club World Cup in summer, Messi can also be shown there. It is still open whether he will also play the 2026 World Cup.
A contract extension would be at least an indication that the old star could actually tackle the title defense project. According to Athletic, this is now becoming more likely. That would be a real bang – both for Co -hosts USA and Argentina.
Jorge Mas, the owner of Inter Miami, conducted the negotiations with Messi and at the beginning of the week on FDP Radio Miami that “something big stands in the stars is a wonderful future for the club and for Lionel. It is solely his decision”.
Inter-owner wants to see Messi in the new stadium
MAS added: “I expect that we will decide on all of this within 60 to 90 days. My hope was always – and everything we do is to see Messi 2026 play in our new stadium. Hopefully this will happen.”
Last September, the club reported to play its home games in the new Miami Freedom Park stadium from 2026. The arena offers space for 25,000 spectators. This also includes a public park as well as entertainment and restaurant facilities.
Originally, the stadium was supposed to open its doors this year.
