In July, the Portuguese player, who was trained by Klopp among others at the Reds, died in a car accident. “I received a message in the morning. It came from a friend in Liverpool,” Klopp reported in the podcast The Diary of a CEO in conversation with British entrepreneur Steven Bartlett.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was impossible. I heard it and knew what it meant, but I couldn’t believe it,” he continued.
Klopp described Jota as a family member: “It’s something you have to deal with without exactly knowing how to do it. Everyone wanted him to play in Liverpool for the next ten years.”
“Still can’t talk about it”
The German said that he couldn’t imagine the Liverpool locker room without Jota and that the death was very hard for everyone involved.
He fought back tears as he spoke about his former protégé and admitted: “I still can’t talk about it. It was an incredible shock.”
