“Scary”: Ski star talks about life-threatening sepsis

Due to the increasing number of tragic falls, the FIS wants to increase safety in skiing. DSV Alpine Director Wolfgang Maier and the active professionals around Linus Straßer, Lena Dürr, Emma Aicher and Kira Weidle-Winkelmann take a stand.

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is facing his comeback in the World Cup. The ski star talks in a podcast with his fiancée Mikaela Shiffrin about his time of suffering and a life-threatening situation.

Ski star Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has spoken emotionally about his time of suffering after his serious injury in January 2024. An infection in his shoulder repeatedly caused problems.

In a serious case on the Lauberhorn downhill, the Norwegian suffered a shoulder dislocation with torn ligaments and a deep cut wound on his calf with nerve involvement.

“The infection was frightening”

Since then, Kilde has been working on his World Cup comeback and has had to undergo five operations. In the podcast What’s the Point with his fiancée Mikaela Shiffrin, he reported that an infection had subsequently occurred, triggering sepsis.

According to Kilde, the blood poisoning then put his life at risk. “I was prepared for the fall, all skiers somehow have to deal with that. But the infection was frightening because it was so uncontrollable,” confessed the ski star.

He added: “It came out of nowhere. I actually thought I was doing everything right. That was really bad and I’ve been thinking about it every day since the last operation.”

The Norwegian explained that it feels to him as if the infection is constantly drawing attention to itself and reminding him that it is still there.

“Sometimes fluid gets into the shoulder. That’s quite normal in rehab, but I immediately think it’s a new infection,” Kilde described and explained: “That’s why I get panic attacks. Then I wake up in the middle of the night and think: ‘Oh, damn, the infection is back.'”
