Slalom in Gurgl: Shiffrin in a league of her own – Dürr is struggling

Maria Höfl-Riesch talks about the chances of German athletes in alpine skiing at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Cortina.

Mikaela Shiffrin delivers another demonstration of power and wins the slalom in Gurgl with ease. Lena Dürr and Emma Aicher have to settle for seventh and ninth place, respectively.

Mikaela Shiffrin once again underlined her exceptional status at the second World Cup slalom of the season. The ski queen from the USA took her 103rd World Cup victory, the 66th in slalom, in a superior manner. Shiffrin triumphed by an unbelievable 1.23 seconds ahead of Lara Colturi from Albania and Camille Rast from Switzerland (+1.41).

Dürr out of luck: “I picked the dumbest spot”

Germany’s top athlete Lena Dürr was only a supporting actress in the Shiffrin show and missed the podium. The 34-year-old finished only seventh in Gurgl, Austria, after getting a pole on her ski shortly before the flat section and losing a lot of speed.

“It’s annoying, I picked the dumbest spot,” she said in an interview. “You notice that the field is getting tighter and tighter and you have to make sure you have two good runs. I try to take the good with me. I really liked the approach in the second run,” she concluded. Dürr had finished fourth most recently in Levi.

Aicher again in the top 10

Emma Aicher, a surprising third in Finland, finished ninth. The German all-rounder had been in tenth place at the halfway point. Jessica Hilzinger narrowly missed the second run in 33rd place.
