“Wonderful scenes”: Hummels celebrated when it is farewell

Even a year after his departure, the farewell to Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund has not yet been ticked off. An ex-colleague criticizes BVB for the circumstances.

Mats Hummels gets his final appearance with AS Roma. The former German national player is celebrated.

Former DFB star Mats Hummels was frenetically celebrated in what is presumably his last game as a professional soccer player.

The 35-year-old was substituted in late (90th minute) during AS Roma’s 2-0 victory over FC Turin, thus getting his final appearance for the Romans.

After the final whistle, Hummels’ teammates celebrated the defender, hugged and embraced him – and threw him into the air several times.

“These are wonderful scenes,” said commentator Oliver Faßnacht on DAZN.

Hummels moved to Rome after leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024, but had a difficult time there. In recent weeks, he has been no more than a fringe player.

A possible engagement for BVB at the Club World Cup is unlikely to happen.
