In the future there will be a salary cap in series C. This could become a model for the higher leagues.
In Italian football, a salary limit will be introduced in the third division in the third division. According to this, in the 2025/26 clubs, only a maximum of 55 percent of their turnover may spend on player salaries, as the Assembly of Series C associations decided. If the limit is exceeded, penalties such as fines or point deductions threaten, in the drastic case even a loss of the game license for the following season is possible.
The innovation now goes through a test phase, with a successful trial period, an introduction in the two higher leagues should also be possible. The introduction of a “Salary Cap” is a main concern of sports manager Matteo Mariani, appointed President of the Italian series C last October. “We have to control the expenses in order to avoid a financial collapse of Italian football. Without a healthy handling of financial resources, football cannot survive,” Mariani told Italian media.
