Matthijs de Ligt is experiencing another coaching change in his career. It seems there’s a curse on the Manchester United defender.
Groundhog Day again: Matthijs de Ligt has experienced the next coaching change of his career at Manchester United with the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
At just 26 years old, the Dutchman has already trained under 13 different coaches since the 2016/17 season. De Ligt has had at least one new coach every year of his career so far.

De Ligt had four coaches at Ajax Amsterdam alone
Under Peter Bosz, the defender made his professional debut for Ajax Amsterdam in October 2016. Bosz moved to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017, and Marcel Keizer took over his position.
However, he was already dismissed in December 2017. After Michael Reiziger stood in as interim coach for one game for Ajax, Erik ten Hag took over as the new head coach. Under him, Amsterdam reached the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season and played an overall furious year.
In the summer of 2019, de Ligt then ventured abroad and moved to Juventus Turin. At that time, the Italians were coached by Maurizio Sarri, but he was replaced by Andrea Pirlo after about a year.
The 46-year-old also had to vacate his seat after just one year, and Massimiliano Allegri immediately took over the reins.
De Ligt also experiences Nagelsmann’s dismissal at FC Bayern
In 2022, de Ligt then left Juventus Turin and joined FC Bayern. However, in March 2023, Julian Nagelsmann was replaced by Thomas Tuchel at the Munich club.
About a year and a half ago, Ligt’s time in Germany was over, and he signed with his current employer, Manchester United.
Wild times at Manchester United
When the 26-year-old arrived at the Red Devils, ten Hag was his coach, but his compatriot was dismissed in October 2024.
After Ruud van Nistelrooy took over on an interim basis, United brought in Amorim from Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese was also relieved of his duties last Monday after about a year, so Darren Fletcher is currently in charge of the team until a new solution is found.
