“Really deserved”: the biathlon has a new king

By the last shooting, Johannes Thingnes Bö and Sturla Holm Laegreid have a breathtaking duel. In the end, Laegreid keeps the nerves – and crowns the overall World Cup winner.

Biathlon star Johannes Thingnes Bö has missed the next success on his farewell tour on the Holmenkollen at home and has to bury his dream of sixth triumph in the overall World Cup.

One day after his victory in the sprint, the 31 -year -old took second place after three penalty rounds (+15.5 seconds) behind his flawless compatriot and competitor Sturla Holm Laegreid – who won the large crystal ball for the first time.

Bö missed victory: “Gave someone who was better”

“Ultimately, I think it was a fantastic season,” said Bö on the Danish broadcaster TV2 : “It was a scarce fight, but there was one that was better.”

ARD expert Arnd Peiffer also pulled his hat off the new biathlon king Laegreid: “He is a very fine athlete and fine person. A very fair athlete who really deserves this with his sovereignty and nerve strength,” said Peiffer about the 28-year-old.

With 1,236 points, the seven -time world champion Laegreid is at the top of the overall ranking before the final mass start on Sunday. Bö follows in second place with 1,132 points.

Third in the persecution of Oslo, Quentin Fillon Maillet from France, who kept the upper hand in the target sprint against the Italian Tommaso Giacomel.

Nawrath as the best German in 10th place

The German biathletes played no role in awarding the podium after the mixed sprint the previous day. Philipp Nawrath (2 penalty rounds/+2: 03.2 minutes) was tenth as the best DSV athlete. Only Justus Strelow (2/+2: 35.8) in 16th place and Roman Rees (3/+2: 44.6) as 19th.

Bö had gone into the race with almost half a minute ahead of Laegreid, after a mistake in the first shooting, the upholstery melted to just eight seconds.

Bö makes three mistakes

After another mistake of the Norwegian, Laegreid took the lead at halftime. The decision was only made at the last shooting when Bös made his third mistake of the day.

Laegreid, who had already occupied the second overall in the World Cup three times in recent years, crowned his triumph on Saturday as the winner in the persecution rating.
