Stone attack: Bus driver dies after basketball game in Italy

After a game in the second Italian basketball league, there was a stone attack on a fan bus. One of the two drivers died.

The driver of a fan bus for the Italian second-division basketball team Pistoia Basket died after an attack with stones.

The vehicle was attacked by unknown individuals on the return trip from the away game at Sebastiani Rieti; a stone shattered the windshield and struck the second driver, the 65-year-old died instantly. According to media reports, supporters of the home team are believed to be responsible.

Death After Brick Attack

The incident occurred on a highway north of Rome near the city of Rieti. The emergency responders who arrived could only confirm the driver’s death. Another stone hit the front windshield in front of the first driver but did not break through it. Tensions had already arisen in the stands during Sunday’s match, which Pistoia won. Security forces had to separate the two groups of fans.

The police are searching for the attackers. The Tuscan club Pistoia reacted with shock to the incident. “President Joseph David and the entire club stood with the family in their grief,” read a statement.
