In the criticism: FIFA boss Gianni Infantino
A “dysfunctional leadership system” is criticized in a statement.
Ten years after the major corruption scandal at FIFA, nothing has changed for the better at the world football association. At least, that is the opinion of an association of NGOs, academics, writers, whistleblowers, and fan groups. In a joint statement, they denounce the “ongoing mismanagement” at FIFA under President Gianni Infantino. According to them, the association is “possibly worse managed today than it was ten years ago.”
Ten years ago, numerous high-ranking officials were arrested for corruption around the FIFA Congress in Zurich, and the era of then-President Joseph S. Blatter ended shortly thereafter. According to the critics, the reform process that was sought as a result has failed.
“Our statement shows not only this failure under Gianni Infantino, but also the breadth of expert opposition and frustration with FIFA’s dysfunctional leadership model,” said Nick McGeehan, Co-Director of FairSquare, who coordinated the joint statement.
