On Monday evening, a car drove into the crowd at the FC Liverpool championship parade. Police have now classified the act as “non-terrorist”. This was stated by the Deputy Police Chief of the Merseyside administrative district, Jenny Sims. Investigators assumed that it was an “isolated incident”.
At Least 47 Injured
There is “no search for other people in this context,” Sims said. A 53-year-old Briton was arrested. 27 people had to be taken to hospital, there are two seriously injured, including a child. Twenty other people were treated on the spot in a large blue tent on the street.
The FC Liverpool championship parade was overshadowed by an accident
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time, a dark vehicle drove into a crowd of people, just minutes before the fans had cheered the team on an open bus at this point. The area around Water Street in the city center was cordoned off, and a rescue helicopter landed. Tens of thousands of people had come to the Reds’ victory parade after their 20th championship title in English football, despite the pouring rain.
Four people, including a child, were trapped under the car and had to be rescued, said Nick Searle, fire chief of the Merseyside Fire Department. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the “remarkable courage of the police and other emergency services. They are supporting and providing for those who were injured in this terrible event,” the politician said in a statement, adding: “The whole country stands behind Liverpool.”
